Introduction: We aimed to analyze the anthropometric and body composition profiles of Down syndrome (DS) adults; to describe their dietary habits, nutrient intake, and physical activity patterns; and to identify the related risk factors which may influence their health status and quality of life.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a cohort of 23 DS adults (45% women) aged 21-44 years. Anthropometry and body composition were assessed by bioelectrical impedance. Dietary nutrient intake was assessed quantitatively using a 72-h recall. A food frequency questionnaire and the prevention with Mediterranean diet-PREDIMED questionnaire were used for qualitative rating.Results: Higher fat mass (FM) and lower lean mass (LM), bone mass (BM), and waist to hip ratio (WHR) were observed in women compared to men. LM and BM decreased, and body mass index (BMI), FM, and WHR increased with aging (all P < 0.05). Vitamin D and iodine intakes were not met by 70% and 60% of the studied participants, respectively. A total of 82% of the participants consumed less than 5 portions of fruits and vegetables per day and overconsumed food groups such as sweets and snacks and red meat (> 2 times per week). Protein intake showed a significant positive correlation with height (r = 0.489, P < 0.05), whereas fat intake was positively correlated with sweets and snacks (r = 0.521, P < 0.05).Conclusion: The present findings support the existence of poor anthropometric and body composition profiles, and diet quality, underscoring the need for an interdisciplinary team assessment to enhance health and quality of life in DS adults.

Environmental noise is an important social issue that directly affects the efficiency of the students. The aim of this study is to investigate how environmental noise generated in the library affects the performance at learning commons. For this study, the noise of the library was recorded and sixteen students of Tecnologico de Monterrey, were recruited. They were divided into four groups, and two collaborative activities were undertaken with and without noise. In both scenarios, the performance and the physiological reaction of students were investigated. The results showed that the students had a 4% higher performance in a quiet environment than in a noisy one, in the same way, the heart rate increased by 3.48% and the blink rate by 22.91%. Finally, the neural electrical activity was reduced by at least 3%. The findings of the present study suggest that collaborative work is difficult to undertake in noise scenarios such as learning commons, where no appropriated policies are established and followed. Cognitive performance is lower in noisy than in quiet conditions.

From electrochemical potentiodynamic and potentiostatic techniques, the electrodeposition mechanism and kinetics of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), from Pd(II) ions dissolved in the choline chloride-urea deep eutectic solvent (reline) at 343 K, are reported for the first time. From the analysis of the potentiostatic current density transients, using the model developed by Palomar-Pardavé et al. [ Electrochim. Acta, 2005, 50, 4736-4745], it shows that the PdNPs electrodeposition occurs by multiple 3D nucleation and diffusion controlled-growth with the simultaneous reduction of residual water on the PdNPs growing surfaces. This model renders not just the quantification of the palladium nucleation kinetics parameters, but it effectively allows deconvolving the individual contributions to the total current and, thus, from the integration of the j-t plots of these contributions. It was demonstrated that the charge amount of each process depends on the deposition time and applied overpotential. From SEM images, it was possible to verify that the palladium deposits were constituted by PdNPs and from XPS measurements that these PdNPs were formed by a metallic palladium (core) and Pd(OH)2 (shell).

The objective of this study is to evaluate the general characteristics and oncological results in a cohort of 408 cases submitted to da Vinci Standard 4-armed robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), performed between October 2006 and February 2015 at Clínico San Carlos hospital. Statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS 20.0 program. Qualitative variables are presented with their frequency distribution and quantitative variables with their mean and standard deviation or median and interquartile range. The χ2 test was used to analyze the association of qualitative variables. The disease-free survival outcome variable was evaluated with a Kaplan-Meier curve analysis, and the differences were contrasted with the Breslow test. A Cox regression model was adjusted. Among the results, we highlight the follow-up of 47 months (32-68.75m), recurrence-free survival of 90 months (95% CI, 86-94), median time to recurrence of 23 months (10.5-37 m), recurrence 16'6% (68/408), biochemical recurrence (62/498, 15'2%) and 22% of complications, mostly Clavien I-II. The results are summarized in Tables 1 to 7 and Figure 1. CONCLUSIONS: 1) RARP is a safe technique with an acceptable percentage of complications, mostly minor (Clavien grades iandii), 2) We found a higher probability of remaining recurrence-free in the lower grades of the ISUP classification and a higher probability of recurrence in high-risk cases, and 3) The multivariate model showed that the ISUP grade was significantly related to survival and the ISUP and PSM classification grades were independent prognostic variables.

From UV-Vis spectrophotometric measurements the acidity constants of Rutin in aqueous media, at 25 °C and 0.1 M ionic strength, were determined as: pK1 = 4.392 ±â€¯0.167, pK2 = 7.130 ±â€¯0.050, pK3 = 8.661 ±â€¯0.042 and pK4 = 12.354 ±â€¯0.020 and the molar absorptivity coefficients of all the Rutin pH-dependent species were reported as a function of wavelength. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of Rutin at neutral pH was investigated using a bare carbon paste electrode, CPE. It was found that both: Rutin electrochemical oxidation and reduction are reversible, adsorption-controlled processes, involving 2 electron transfers. Moreover, the bare CPE was used for the electrochemical quantification of Rutin in neutral aqueous media, displaying the following features: (1.078 ±â€¯0.440) µM, (3.594 ±â€¯0.400) µM and (0.308 ±â€¯0.014) µA µM-1 for the detection and quantification limits and sensitivity, respectively, within the 1-11 µM linear range. Meanwhile the spectrophotometric method displayed the following analytical features: (3.385 ±â€¯1.318) µM, (11.283 ±â€¯3.114) µM and (0.0120 ±â€¯0.0001) AU µM-1 for the detection and quantification limits and sensitivity, respectively within the 11-110 µM linear range. In like manner, the bare CPE is also shown as a robust electrochemical sensor that allows Rutin quantification even in the presence of ascorbic acid, commonly found in Rutin samples.

PM2.5 that have been related to public health risks, were collected during two seasons with High-Vol samplers in platforms of a Mexican subway station, which interconnects through transfers three lines having different depths. The objective was to study the influence of depth on the PM2.5 concentrations and their species. PM2.5 concentrations in cold-dry and warm-dry seasons presented statistical differences, being in average 57 and 66 µgm-3 respectively, in the shallower line 9; 90 µgm-3 and 111 µgm-3 in line 1; and 104 and 122 µgm-3in the deepest line 7. During the cold-dry season and warm-dry season PM2.5concentrations in the subway environment were respectively up to 3.5 times and up to 5 times greater than in the ambient air. Like PM2.5, metals analyzed with an OES-ICP presented higher concentrations in deeper lines as well as PAHs quantified with CG-MS, which ranged from 4.5 to 11.7 ngm-3. High PM2.5, metals and organic toxic concentrations found in deeper lines of the subway environment represent a risk for commuters endorsing the need for ventilation systems to reduce them. Zn, Pb, V and Ni in subway particles presented the highest solubility in artificial lysosomal fluid suggesting high bioavailability in the lung fluids.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Different echographic and fetal magnetic resonance (MRI) measurements have been described in the diagnosis of associated malformations and the prognosis of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). We have reviewed our experience searching for useful isolated or combined parameters and how MRI can complement ultrasound. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We evaluated 29 fetuses with CDH. We examined ultrasonography: Lung to Head (LHR o/e) and in MRI: ipsilateral lung volume (IPV) and total expressed as percentage of observed / expected lung volume (VPT o/e) and percentage of herniated liver (PHH). We studied: survival, ECMO and associated malformations. RESULTS: LHR o/e was the measure that best predicted survival (p< 0.05). VPT o/e did not predict survival or the need of ECMO (p> 0.05). PHH ≥19% was related to the need of ECMO. IPV < 2 cc required ECMO more frequently (p< 0.018) and when it was 0 cc in all cases. No combination of MR measurements was superior to LHR o/e in prediction of survival. MRI complemented the ultrasound in 4 cases: diaphragmatic eventration diagnosed with HDC, right HDC with fluid in the sac that suggested thoracic cyst, differentiation between spleen and lung that measured together overestimated the LHR and/or suspicion of Cornelia de Lange due to facial malformations. CONCLUSIONS: Not a single or combined MRI measurement exceeds LHR o/e in survival prediction. MRI is related to prognosis and can be used to support ultrasound in making decisions. MRI occasionally provides complementary morphological information.

Epigeic worms modify microbial communities through their digestive processes, thereby influencing the decomposition of organic matter in vermicomposting systems. Nevertheless, the enzyme dynamics within the gut of tropically adapted earthworms is unknown, and the enzymes involved have not been simultaneously studied. The activities of 19 hydrolytic enzymes within three different sections of the intestine of Eisenia fetida were determined over a fasting period and at 24 h and 30, 60, and 90 days of vermicomposting, and data were evaluated by multivariate analyses. There were found positive correlations between the maximal activity of glycosyl hydrolases and one esterase with the anterior intestine (coincident with the reduction of hemicellulose in the substrate) and the activity of the protease α-chymotrypsin with posterior intestine. The results suggest that activities of enzymes change in a coordinated manner within each gut section, probably influenced by selective microbial enzyme enrichment and by the availability of nutrients throughout vermicomposting.

Using UV-Vis spectrophotometry a stability study of melatonin at different pH values was done in aqueous media, finding that at acidic pH melatonin is unstable when interacting with the environment, however it becomes stable protecting it from light and oxygen. From the UV-Vis spectra and SQUAD software, melatonin pKa values, in a completely protected aqueous medium, were estimated as 5.777±0.011 and 10.201±0.024. Using the same techniques, the melatonin and ß-cyclodextrin inclusion complex formation constants were assessed at pH3, 7 and 11.5, giving the values of log ß=(3.07±0.06), (2.94±0.01) and (3.07±0.06) M-1, respectively. From the global acidity formation constants and the complexes' formation constants, the molar fractions were determined for each species of MT and MT-ßCD, to build the molar fraction-[ßCD]-pH 3D diagram and the molar fraction-pH 2D diagrams, where it was possible to observe the predominance of the MT species with and without ßCD. A voltammetric study at pH3, allowed obtaining a value of log ß=(3.15±0.01) M-1, which corroborates that obtained through UV-Vis spectrophotometry, supporting strongly the rationale behind using simple, straightforward techniques.

Quercetin spectrofluorometric quantification was carried out in aqueous media (pH 7) using micelles of surfactants, namely: CTAB, SDS and TX100 as promoters of quercetin fluorescence, having a critical micelle concentration, CMC, of: 0.94 ± 0.03, 7.7 ± 0.6 and 0.18 ± 0.3 mM, respectively, measured through UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The thermodynamic binding constant, K, for the quercetin-surfactants' micelles supramolecular complex was estimated to be (log(K/M-1)) = 2.87 ± 0.02, 2.78 ± 0.04 and 2.80 ± 0.04, respectively, from fluorescence spectrophotometry. With the aid of these parameters it was possible to construct species distribution diagrams and choose the experimental conditions where quercetin can be quantified in aqueous media from fluorescence measurements. The best lowest limit of detection (0.244 ± 0.092) µM was achieved with CTAB micelles while the best sensitivity (2.919 ± 0.054) M-1 corresponded to SDS.

The combination of ultrasound and mild temperatures to process fruits and vegetables juices is a novel approach that is showing promising results for microbial inactivation and preservation of bioactive compounds and sensory attributes. This study centers on investigating the inactivation of Escherichia coli (ATCC 11755) in carrot juice as a result of the combined effect of ultrasound (24 kHz frequency, 120 µm, and 400 W) with temperature (50, 54, and 58 °C) and processing time (0 to 10 min). In addition, the possible changes in physicochemical properties and the retention of bioactive compounds after processing were analyzed. Microbial inactivation with ultrasound treatment at 50 °C resulted in 3.5 log reduction after 10 min, whereas at 54 °C almost 5 log reduction was attained in the same period of time; meanwhile, for treatment at 58 °C, no viable cells were detected (>5 log reduction) after 2 min. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) on pH (6.80 to 6.82), °Brix (8.0 to 8.5), titratable acidity (0.29% to 0.30%), total carotenoid (1774 to 1835 µg/100 mL), phenolic compounds (20.19 to 20.63 µg/mL), ascorbic acid (4.8 mg/100 mL), and color parameters between fresh and ultrasound treated samples at the studied temperatures. To predict the inactivation patterns, observed values were tested using 3 different general models: first-order, Weibull distribution, and biphasic. The Weibull and biphasic models show good correlation for inactivation under all processing conditions. Results show ultrasound in combination with mild temperature could be effectively used to process fresh carrot juice providing a safe product without affecting physicochemical characteristics. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The combination of ultrasound and mild temperatures is effective in reducing microbial load in carrot juice to safe levels. This combination would be beneficial in the industrial processing of carrot juice without altering the quality attributes or bioactive compounds.

We present an Identify Selective Antibacterial Peptides (ISAP) approach based on abstracts meaning. Laboratories and researchers have significantly increased the report of their discoveries related to antibacterial peptides in primary publications. It is important to find antibacterial peptides that have been reported in primary publications because they can produce antibiotics of different generations that attack and destroy the bacteria. Unfortunately, researchers used heterogeneous forms of natural language to describe their discoveries (sometimes without the sequence of the peptides). Thus, we propose that learning the words meaning instead of the antibacterial peptides sequence is possible to identify and predict antibacterial peptides reported in the PubMed engine. The ISAP approach consists of two stages: training and discovering. ISAP founds that the 35% of the abstracts sample had antibacterial peptides and we tested in the updated Antimicrobial Peptide Database 2 (APD2). ISAP predicted that 45% of the abstracts had antibacterial peptides. That is, ISAP found that 810 antibacterial peptides were not classified like that, so they are not reported in APD2. As a result, this new search tool would complement the APD2 with a set of peptides that are candidates to be antibacterial. Finally, 20% of the abstracts were not semantic related to APD2.

INTRODUCTION: Radical prostatectomy is a more skillful procedure in kidney graft recipients. Robotic surgery can provide a useful minimally invasive tool. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to evaluate the robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) in kidney transplant recipients, describing intra/postoperative complications, renal and oncological outcomes. METHODS: This is a retrospective study conducted in a single institution of 84 RALP. Four of them were kidney transplant recipients. Side of the renal graft, clinical stage, intra/postoperative events, operating time, creatinine levels before/after intervention and oncologic follow-up were recorded. A systematic review of the literature was performed. RESULTS: Aged 61.25 ± 7.76 years, interval between renal transplantation and RALP: 10 ± 3.16 years. Mean prostate specific antigen: 7.1 ± 2.8 ng/ml, 2 patients were cT1c and 2 cT2a. Preoperative biopsies: Gleason score 3 + 3 in 3 patients, 3 + 4 in 1 patient. Charlson comorbidity index mean was 4.82 ± 0.82. No intra/postoperative events were reported. Mean operating time: 196 ± 20.8 min. Positive surgical margins: 2/4 patients. Pathological analysis: Gleason 3 + 4 in 2 patients and Gleason 3 + 3 in the others 2. A patient developed a bladder neck sclerosis. No differences between pre/postoperative creatinine. Three patients are free of biochemical recurrence and 1 patient required adjuvant radiotherapy. CONCLUSION: RALP in renal transplant recipients is a safe and feasible technique for localized prostate cancer. No difference in oncological outcomes and no impairments on renal function were found.

Changes induced on freshwater microalga Dictyosphaerium chlorelloides (Dc(wt)) acclimated in the laboratory until their survival in culture media enriched with cadmium 100 µM have been studied. Cadmium removal by living cells of this Cd-resistant (Dc(CdR100)) strain was tested in cultures exposed to 100 µM Cd during 30 days. Cell dimensions were measured under light microscopy, and cell growth was studied. Photosynthetic yield (ΦPSII) was analyzed and the photosynthetic oxygen development and respiration response was obtained. Results show that Dc(CdR100) strain exhibited significant cell morphology changes in comparison to Dc(wt) cells, which affected both surface area and cell biovolume. Malthusian fitness analysis showed that Dc(CdR100) strain living in Cd-enriched culture had developed a lower capacity of nearly 50% growth, and its photosynthetic oxygen development and respiration response were significantly reduced in both light and dark photosynthetic phases. Dc(CdR100) strain showed a very high capacity to remove cadmium from the aquatic environment (over 90%), although most of the removed heavy metal (≈70%) is adhered to the cell wall. These specific characteristics of Dc(CdR100) cells suggest the possibility of using this strain in conjunction with Dc(wt) strain as bioelements into a dual-head biosensor, and in bioremediation processes on freshwater polluted with Cd.

AIM: Nissen fundoplication (NF) is a procedure with technical difficulties and variable functional prognosis the lower the patient's age is. Our objective is to analyze the peculiarities of this procedure when performed in children under 1 year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of the NF in our center from 1999 to 2014. We review the differences between children under 1 year of age and the leftover of the series: history, indications, surgical approach and postoperative outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 233 patients (57.1% male) were operated at a median age of 2.3years (1 month-17.31years), of which 82 (35.2%) were younger than 1 year. It Open surgery was performed in 118 patients (86.6% of children under 1 year and 31.1% over 1 year, p <0.05) and laparoscopic in 115. The median follow-up was 3.92 ± 3.24 years. Patients under 1 year had a higher number of comorbidities (91.5% vs 81.5%), respiratory symptoms (76.8% vs 49.7%) and postoperative complications (20.7% vs 9.9% OR = 2.4), with statistically significant differences (p <0.05). There were not differences in the Nissen's failure rate (15.9% vs 8.6%) or the need of reoperation (15.9% vs 7.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Patients under 1 year operated by NF form a group with particular indications and comorbidities. Although the outcomes among these patients are favourable, surgical complications are more frequent than in older children.


INTRODUCCION Y OBJETIVOS: La funduplicatura de Nissen (FN) es un procedimiento que plantea dificultades técnicas y un pronóstico funcional variable cuanto menor es la edad del paciente. Nuestro objetivo es analizar las peculiaridades de esta intervención cuando se realiza a niños menores de 1 año. MATERIAL Y METODOS: Estudio retrospectivo de las FN en nuestro centro de 1999 a 2014. Se evaluaron las diferencias entre menores de 1 año de vida y el resto de la serie en cuanto a antecedentes, indicaciones, abordaje quirúrgico y evolución postoperatoria. RESULTADOS: Un total de 233 pacientes (57,1% varones) fueron intervenidos a una mediana de edad de 2,3 a (1 mes-17,31 a), de los que 82 (35,2%) eran menores de 1 año. La cirugía fue abierta en 118 pacientes (86,6% de los menores de 1 año y 31,1% de los mayores de 1 año, p <0,05) y laparoscópica en 115. La mediana de seguimiento fue de 3,92 años. Los pacientes menores de 1 año presentaron mayor número de comorbilidades (91,5% vs 81,5%), sintomatología respiratoria (76,8% vs 49,7%) y complicaciones postoperatorias (20,7% vs 9,9%, OR=2,4), siendo estas diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p <0,05). No hubo diferencias en cuanto al fallo del Nissen (15,9% vs 8,6%) ni a la necesidad de reintervención (15,9% vs 7,9%). CONCLUSIONES: Los pacientes menores de 1 año operados mediante FN constituyen un grupo con indicaciones y comorbilidades particulares. Aunque los resultados son favorables, las complicaciones quirúrgicas son más frecuentes.

RESUMO

The thermodynamic constants of the complex Cu(II)-dopamine in aqueous solution were evaluated from spectrophotometric data using the software SQUAD. It was found that there exist Cu(II):DA complexes with 1:1 and 1:2 stoichiometries and that their predominance depends on both the solution pH and the [Cu(II)]/[DA] ratio. Moreover, it is shown that the solubility of Cu(OH)2(s) increases drastically when these complexes are thermodynamically stable.
